SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

NOTE: In this section I'm going to refer to both Ozma (Ozpin's original incarnation) and Ozpin (the last incarnation before the current incarnation of Oscar). Technically, Ozma, Ozpin, and everyone in between are all the same person now. Yet Ozpin is consistently treated as somewhat distinct from Ozma. So 'Ozma' means I am referring more to the general idea of this guy who has been reincarnating over and over again, whereas 'Ozpin' is referring about this specific guy who came right before Oscar.

1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
The last time a god offered Ozpin a deal that seemed too good to be true, he ended up trapped in an endless, miserable war with his ex-wife from which the only escape is a literal apocalypse. So his inclination would be to run from a dream offering him whatever he wanted... except that he really, really wants to find a way to stop said ex-wife without setting off an apocalypse in the process.

Despite his misgivings, he's desperate enough to reach out for whatever is offered to him.

2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
Push forward.

Fear, transformation, and losing control are inescapable constants in Ozpin's life. Every time Ozpin dies, he's reincarnated inside the mind of another person. Over time, Ozpin and his new host merge into one, both of them transforming until the line between the two is indistinguishable and they can no longer be considered two separate entities. Ozpin's new host fears that inevitable loss of who they are as a person. Ozpin himself references having once experienced the same 'panic and confusion' that Oscar feels upon realizing that he's the next incarnation of Ozma. And of course, the more the new host learns about Ozpin's endless, doomed struggle against Salem, the more that host inherits his fears.

And this cycle is unending. The only way for him to break it is to give up and condemn Remnant to total destruction, which is something he's trying desperately to avoid. So when confronted with the ideas for fear, transformation, and losing control, there's really only one option left: persevere.

3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Ozpin forms aloof but sincere connections. As a man with a lot of secrets he finds it difficult to really open up to other people. Even among his closest allies he's not really peers with any of them. It's clear that he does care about these people—he's openly distraught when one such ally describes meeting Ozpin as 'the worst luck of my life'—but even so he holds himself somewhat apart, paternalistic at best and patronizing at worst.

Despite his best efforts he doesn't always manage to sit on that pedestal, but it does still take some pretty extraordinary circumstances to make it happen. As of late he has a more equitable relationship with the people around him... but only after having all of his worst secrets forcibly revealed to said people while the world is on the verge of a full blown apocalypse.

4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict?
His love for the people of Remnant and his inability to trust them.

Ozpin has been alive for thousands of years, and in that time he's watched thousands of his loved ones die and suffered countless betrayals. He describes his immortality as both a 'curse' and a 'punishment' and takes it as a given that Salem, the only other immortal on Remnant, craves nothing more than her own death. In short, Ozpin really doesn't enjoy being immortal. You would think that he would take any opportunity to divest himself of such a curse as soon as possible.

And the thing is, he could. Ozpin knows exactly how to conduct the ritual that will end his life, and he's had an endless number of opportunities to do so. But he doesn't. Even in the very lowest, most despair-riddled moments of his life he simply isolates himself and gives up on doing anything at all, rather than actively seeking to complete the ritual. And when he manages to pull himself out of his despair (which he always does, somehow) he doesn't just let the cards fall out they may. He actively seeks to prevent Salem from completing the ritual in his stead, and teaches the people of Remnant how to best defend themselves from her minions.

The 'why' is pretty simple. The ritual that would end his life would also end the world entirely. Ozpin simply cares too much about Remnant and its inhabitants to condemn them all to death for his own sake. Throughout his many lives he's gotten married, had children, settled towns, ruled kingdoms, and founded orders to oppose Salem and her forces multiple times. He is obviously, deeply, passionately invested in the people of Remnant and their continued existence.

Despite this, Ozpin is incredibly closed off and unable to trust the people around him. Even the people he truly cares about and who care about him in turn. His experiences have lead him to believe that there's no one he can fully trust but himself. So he spends a great deal of his time withholding the truth, twisting the facts, outright lying, and generally just playing things close to the chest. It's an incredibly isolating way to live, but he seems to genuinely believe it's for the best. It's only very recently (and after some significant trauma) that he's started to finally open up to his most recent inner circle.

VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Token

Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Ancient, sacred, and uncanny is basically what Ozpin is in his own canon. An immortal wizard sent on a divine mission and one of only six magic users on the entire planet, four of which inherited their magic directly from him. Being a mage also just gels better with his overall deal.
